Mental illness is defined as a mental, behavioral, and/or emotional disorder. It varies in how it impacts one's life from no impairment at all to mild, moderate and sometimes severe.
Mental illness can affect our thoughts, moods, emotions and behaviors in ways that cause problems in our lives.
Thoughts are our ideas, opinions and beliefs about people and the world around us. Thoughts that are reinforced over and over become our attitudes.
The simplest way to describe an emotion is to say that it is how you feel about a situation. This includes happiness, sadness, fear, excitement, or anger among others.
Behaviors are how you act or conduct yourself. They are reactions to situations. For example, crying is a behavior often associated with sadness and sometimes extreme happiness. Another behavior might be covering your eyes when watching a horror movie.
Moods and emotions are linked but different. Moods tend last longer like a couple of days and emotions come and go quickly. Moods are often not tied to a particular situation and are not as intense as emotions.
What influences emotions?
Emotions are influenced by:
Traditions, cultures and beliefs. Some cultures might believe it is bad or a sign of weakness to express emotions while others embrace it.
Genetics: there are 6 different emotional styles that are influenced by the structure of our brains. We can change this! Our brains are amazing.
Physical Conditions: certain conditions like Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Alzheimer's, Brain Tumors or even metabolic diseases like Diabetes can impact emotional conditions dramatically.
What we think affects how we feel. If you are stuck in a traffic jam and think to yourself, "Now I am going to be late!" You might feel anger or anxiety. If you instead think to yourself, "I am not always late but maybe next time I will leave a few minutes earlier." You might have already solved your own problem so you can feel relaxed.
We can change our thoughts and emotions! If you are aware of them, then you can change them. Certain types of mental training like mindfulness or therapies like CBT or DBT can help you change your perceptions of the world. This can help you to feel happy, calm and maybe make you more resilient!
